Taralga Sewerage Scheme

Last modified: April 23, 2009 - 1:12 PM

Upper Lachlan Shire Council is pleased to advise that construction of the Taralga Sewerage Scheme commenced in March 2009. Construction is the culmination of several years of planning and funding negotiations. Council has been successful in securing 100% Government funding for the project, thereby keeping costs for the Taralga community at the most affordable level possible.

The project provides infrastructure required for the sustainable development of Taralga, while reducing public health risks and improving water quality in the greater Sydney water supply catchment.

The construction of the Scheme will be undertaken in three stages;

STAGE 1:

Construction of sewer mains throughout Taralga and earthwork on the sewerage treatment plant site. The contract for this work has been awarded and it is expected that construction works will commence in late March 2009 and be completed by October 2009.

STAGE 2: Construction of the sewerage treatment plant. Detailed design of the plant is currently being undertaken and construction is expected to be undertaken from September 2009 to June 2010.

STAGE 3: Residents connect to the system and decommission existing septic systems. Connection to the new sewer system will be available on the completion of the new sewerage treatment plant.

Further details of Stages 2 and 3 will be provided as the project progresses. The balance of this information sheet provides details of Stage 1 of the project.

STAGE 1: CONSTRUCTION OF SEWER MAINS THROUGHOUT TARALGA

Stage 1 of the project will have some impact on the residents of Taralga. These impacts are to be kept to the minimum level possible. Construction works will involve open trenching and construction of pipelines throughout the village. Pipeline construction areas include:-

• Street Verges;
• Street Crossings; and
• Within residents private properties.

It is a misconception that sewer mains are always located in the street. Sewers are located to provide gravity fall from the house to the sewer pipe, and in many instances this requires the sewer main to be constructed along the rear or side boundary of the property. In some cases the sewer main will traverse existing lots, however these are essentially larger lots without existing residences. Typically the closer the sewer main is to your property the lower cost for your future connection.

Although the sewer main cannot be built over, the sewer main has very little lasting impact on the property. Once constructed the property and soil surface is restored to its pre-existing condition.

Construction of the sewer will commence at the north eastern corner of the village adjacent to Halls road and continue along the eastern side of Taralga adjacent to Corroboree Creek and progressively extend up into the built up areas of the village. Construction will be undertaken between the hours of 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday and between 7am and 1pm most Saturdays. Short delays on roads can be expected, however resident access to their properties will be maintained at all times.

The construction of the pipelines will be undertaken by Contractor, Josa Pty Ltd on behalf of Council. Residents will be advised of the intention to access and undertake construction within and in the vicinity of their property prior to work commencing on the site. Records will be taken of the pre-existing condition of the work area within the property. All disturbed areas of the property will be returned to the agreed pre-existing condition, with the resident required to sign off once the rectification works have been completed.

The community will remain informed of the progress of the project via a community liaison plan administered by the contractor and Council.

Copies of plans showing the route of the sewer in relation to your property are available from Upper Lachlan Shire Council's Taralga Office. Plans and any further information required can be obtained by contacting Council on (02) 48301000.
